History of skrati Since pre-Columbian times the inhabitants of Central and South America have been preparing a drink extracted from cacao beans. The Aztecs called the drink cacauatl, the Mayans called it xocoatl. The cacao beans were roasted over a fire and then ground (by hand) into a thick paste, which was diluted with water. For a better taste, corn butter, pepper and vanilla was added. In Suriname a similar cacao drink was prepared. This delicacy is still known as skrati. TAN BUN skrati manufactures products from Surinamese cacao. The ancient Surinamese domestic craft has been brought into the present day. TAN BUN skrati does not only produce the cacao drink, but also designs and produces other delicacies such as chocolates, cupcakes and pralines. TAN BUN skrati has been in operation since 2010. This unique business processes the cacao in using artisanal methods and strives for the highest quality during harvesting, drying, roasting and grinding. This process emphasizes and improves the taste of skrati. Origin of the cacao tree The South American Amazon region is the natural habitat of the cacao tree. Through the rainforest the tree has spread towards Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, the Guyanas and the Caribbean. Suriname has the perfect climate for the cacao tree. There are 2 main types, Theobroma Criollo and Theobroma Forastero, but because of cross pollination there are 400 varieties of cacao trees in Suriname. |
